[NEWS] Mohegan Tribe Expands Biomass Energy Business

– January 16, 2018, Norwich Bulletin

moheganThe Mohegan Tribe has created a company to export wood pellets as fuel to plants that produce electricity in the nation and worldwide.

Mohegan Renewable Energy recently acquired a 100,000-ton per year manufacturing plant in Crossville, Alabama, which along with a Jasper, Tennessee plant, will ship more than 180,000 tons of wood pellets per year to major utilities. More than 50 workers will be added in the coming months.

“Mohegan Renewable Energy is poised to grow the renewable energy business and further penetrate the global markets,” said Mark Boivin, president and CEO of Mohegan Renewable Energy. “We recognize the importance of looking beyond wood pellets and have assembled a knowledgeable and experienced team that understands how to build resilient supply chains for the markets both in Europe and Asia.”

  • The British seem to be the first to note, in relation to the Drax power station burning U.S. sourced pellets that the trees are being felled faster than they are growing and the situation will become unsustainable. Presumably most wood fired power plants will need to burn fossil fuels for 50 years while waiting for the trees to re-grow.

  • Unless they expand sourcing to other regions.

  • That is a fallacy, and the fact is forests are sustainably farmed. What that means is as trees are felled they are replanted, no different than tomatoes.

Also if a tree takes 35yrs to reach maturity, and you have 35 acres of trees then you can fell 1 acre per yr and never reduce the # of trees as long as you replant 1 acre each yr. Remember, its a big world, and here in Canada less than 1% of the forest is sustainably farmed in this manner.

Biomass is the 2nd most abundant, and renewable resource other than water. It not only comprises of tress but crops that can be purposely grown, creating jobs, products, and renewable energy. It also comprises the waste from farming, logging, and our daily lives, and there are mountain of residual biomass globally in the form of manure, bagasse, msw, still waiting to be utilized in place of fossil fuels.

Drax is leading the way, creating more renewable energy for England through biomass than any other renewable technology, and with REC support than the other technologies. Biomass also supports 10X jobs than any other renewable technology, and reduces more GHG.

The pathway to the lowest cost renewable power,
that also has the benefits of being available on demand or continuous,
is via the conversion of older pulverized coal power plants to use advanced solid biofuels
    (Future Metrics, W. Strauss, 2014)

Substitution of coal by forest bioenergy generates GHG emission savings over the shortest time frame
    (Bioenergy, Laganiere et al, 2016)

Biomass creates by far the most long-term, operating jobs of any renewable energy:
(Ferroukhi R, et al, 2013. Renewable Energy and Jobs. IRENA)

up to 5.5 per MW for bioenergy
vs 0.2-0.7 per MW for PV solar and on-shore wind

Mostly the quibble is over the time frame, no?
